Logo Ideas

A logo is a graphical representation or symbol of a company name. A logo allows people to recognise the company, in our case a band and defines in from others. A logo would be used on the digipack, on a website and in any advertisements.

Our logo ideas for 'Drop Out' include:

We have chosen to go for a strong bold title, in black and white. We like the black and white titles as they are simplistic and will stand out against photographs etc. After looking at the four font styles we have decided to use this font:

Actin' a Disgrace
Written by Chris Tye and Chris Swann

Lyrics

Had a bit much, you best slow down,
That's what people say when I'm drinking in town,
They think I'm a prat, I'm actin' all that,
But I know I can handle it I said it that's that,
And through all of this, they say I won't learn.
But who really cares mate.
Lets be fair you only live once,
Started off the night, had a few brews,
Wasn't too sure what we should do.
Got a bit smashed, spent a bit of cash,
Just feelin' a little bit jolly.
I asked my mates, where should be go?
Didn't surprise me when they said they didn't know,
So to save the night, ordered a round of shots,
One, two, down the whole lot,
The nights coming on, the drinks coming thick,
My mate runs to the toilet cause he said he felt sick,
All the ladies are laughing, takin' the mick,
Time to move on out the club I think.
So we get lairy, down to the next but the doormans there,
Let us in mate, but we had no luck,
Cause we argued a bit then my face got torn.

Chorus
Keep yourself at that pace mate .............
Keep on drinking at this rate, you're gonna be out of your face,
Keep yourself on that pace mate, you're actin' like a disgrace
Keep on drinking at this rate, you better get out of this place.

I feel a bit woozy, shouldn't really rush it,
Asked for another but I didn't want to push it,
Who cares what she thought, it's what I think,
I'll have a few more pints and i'll buy you a drink.
All the last rounds were my last bit of money,
Blokes at the back kept looking at me funny.
In my own little world, here on the floor,
Dancing like a prat and I'm hoping to score.
Finally i've been approached, a fit lass steps up with her hair in a ....
We have a little dance, and I'm sure that I'm in,
Have a mint night out with a happy ending.
I go for a kiss, have a bit of a shock,
a neat head grabs me, built like a rock.
Tried to explain the best that I can,
But he cut me off short with his right hand.

Chorus
Keep yourself at that pace mate ..........
Keep on drinking at this rate, you're gonna be out of your face,
Keep yourself on that pace mate, you're actin' like a disgrace
Keep on drinking at this rate, you better get out of this place.

Mate your round
You're up
Well I could buy this guy a gin
I could buy my other mates a gin,
The fact of the matter is, if I buy these guys a drink,
I won't be able to get home, I don't know what to do with myself.
You need to sort it out man, taxis these days cost an absolute arm and a leg.
Have you seen the state of the state of that bird over there?
Mate, she is absolutely out of it. Mate, she looks manlier than him, he needs to sort it out.

Mock Up of Digipak Cover

Mock up of Website homepage

Layout
When I have researched into similar artists websites I have realised that they have links which go to other pages and on the main page they like to give the fans information or 'latest news'. I have decided to use the following layout on the homepage as it advertises the most important factors. The other links at the top are also informative but if a fan was to want important information it should be able to be found on the homepage.

Colour
I have decided that the background is going to be white and the font is going to be simple and black. I have chosen these colours because I have found from my research that black and white are the main colours which are used. I think that by using black and white it will look professional.

Image
I intend on having an image of the logo in the top left hand corner. This will be done to define the band and so that when people see the logo they will know automatically who it is. I would like to have the music video underneath the navigation bar and then another image of the band somewhere on the page.

Font
For the website I would like to use quite a simple font so that I can keep it looking quite professional. A font such as Cambria or Georgia will most likely be used. If it is easy to read then my audience will be able to find what they want easily.

Risk Assessment

Safety is very important when filming, so I have created a risk assessment so that I am aware of the possible risks.

What is the risk?
Who/What is at risk?
What is the risk level?
What am I going to do to prevent the risk?
Dropping or damaging the camera
The camera
Medium/High
To make sure that I do not drop the camera I will make sure that the camera is securely screwed onto the tripod at all times. When the camera is not being used I shall make sure it is in its case.
Losing equipment
The equipment
Low
The props which are being used are quite large and should not be lost easily. When the filming is finished I shall check that all the equipment used at the beginning is still with us at the end.
Damaging equipment
The equipment
Low/
Medium
Unless we are being careless or an accident happens the risk of damaging the equipment should be low because we should be being responsible with our possessions.
Breaking the tripod during filming
The tripod
Low
The tripod which I am using should not break as it is reasonably new and in good condition. I will make sure that when I use it that it is being used correctly.

Props Preparation

There are many props which are going to be needed to make our music video

The band
For the performance part of the music video the band are going to need all of their equipment in order for them to perform, therefore the props they will need includes:
Lead guitar
Bass guitar
Drum set
Microphone
Micrphone Stands
Amplifiers
Leads

All these props will help create a realistic mise en scene for a band room. All of these props are expected in a band set up therefore we will need all of them as we want to make the people in our music look like a band as much as possible.

Daisy
In order for Daisy to 'act a disgrace' she will also need props to complete her character. These include:
Alcohol
Glasses - Wine/shot etc
Cigarettes
(what looks like) Drugs

Costume Planning

The Band
For the band we would like them to wear casual clothes which they would wear all the time on a daily basis.

Printed T-shirts such as these;

These items or clothing are popular for people of the indie/rock genre therefore would be appropriate for our music video. These t-shirts with jeans is the casual look which we are going for and want the band to wear.

Daisy
For Daisy we want her outfit to stand out within the crowd. In the beginning of the video when she is about to go out we want her to look very pretty with her hair and make up done nicely, having her look nice at the beginning of the video helps see the contrast to when she is at the end of the video and is a disgrace from being too drunk.

We have chosen these costumes for people to wear as they are realistic and can relate to our target audience. Also the clothes which the band will wear are in the latest fashions and links with Dyers theory of 'Stardom' as it suggest youthfulness which he believes people relate to when watching a music video nd this helps it become successful.

Actor/ Character Profile

Chris Tye
Aged 22
Lead guitarist
Chris will be playing his role of playing the guitar in the performance part of the music video. He is part of the band and also was one of the main contributors towards the composing of the song, 'Actin A Disgrace'

Jamie Bostock
Aged 21
Jamie will be playing the drums in the performance part of the music video.

Chris Swann
Aged: 22
Lead Singer - Chris will be singer the entire song throughout the music video. He is a big contributor to the song as he wrote and and perfomed it with Chris Tye.

Daisy Ashmore
Aged 18
The 'disgrace'

Role: Daisy will be part of the narrative side of the music video. Her role will involve acting a 'disgrace' which the lyrics of the song are talking about. This will involve her drinking, the use of drugs, and sexual connotations.

Video Location

The Drama Room
The Drama room will be useful in our music video as for the performance parts of our narrative we will need a plain room which has nothing in it. The drama room is perfect for this as it is all plain black and already has available lighting which we can adapt to make it how we want it. This is why we have chosen this room to film the band in and also because it is easily accessible. When the lighting is changed hopefully it will no longer look like a drama room therefore create a realistic mise en scene for a music video.

The Manor Pub
The manor pub will be Daisy's local she will filmed inside there drinking numerous drinks and spending lots of money. She will stumble out of the Manor which shows her night only beginning before she moves on. We have chosen to film in the Manor Pub as it is close to our homes therefore shots can easily be re done if need be. Also the atmosphere is similar to what we want as it is the home to people drinking which is what our song is about.

Kristina's House
There will not be many shots inside Kristina's house, however Daisy will be shown going to bed at the end of the song, showing the end of her night, she will drunkly stumbling up the stairs and falling onto the bed. Kristina's house is a perfect place to shoot the music video as we can adjust the lighting so it is well look and is a realistic setting for a girl's bedroom. It is also in walking distance of The Manor Pub therefore we can have footage of her walking there.

Digipaks

A digipak is a patented style of CD packaging and is a registered trademark of AGI World Ltd.

Digipaks typically are made of a book-style paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Digipacks are used by nearly all record companies to hold the CD.
Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Taking over the use of a jewel case which was popularly used before. The Digipack style became more popular in the 2000's.
Historically, Digipak was only available in large quantities. However, AGI has recently introduced a new product called digipak i-create for the consumer market. Digipak i-create is a web-supported concept that is aimed at music, photo and creative markets.

Conventions
There are many conventions which a digipak usually follows.
Digipaks usually have two fonts used throughout which helps keep it simple
A similar image is used on the front and back
The artists name usually appears quite large on the front of the digipak
The colour scheme is often kept simple to not distract attention from the background image

Here are two examples of digipaks which follow the conventions of a common didgipak. The first two photos are The Kooks album 'Inside in, Inside Out' Followed by the Arctic Monkeys album, 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not'

These album cover both follow a similar angle to what we would like to follow when we make an album cover. The photograps which are used are natural photos and don't look like photos taken in a photo shoot. I think we prefer this also for our album cover. Also the photos have effects on them and are not in full cover i think it both of them this works effectively and makes the title stand out.

Target Audience

For my target audience research I decided to produce a survey on www.surveymonkey.com which I sent to some of my friends through a social networking message. Some of them have already completed the survey but I am still waiting for some results. I asked the following questions;

1. Are you male or female?
2. What age group do you fit under?
3. What genres of music do you like?
4. Do you like to watch a colour or black and white music video?
5. What is your favourite music video and why?
6. What do you prefer in a music video?
7. Do you tend to watch a music video more than once?

I thought that these questions would give me sufficient answers towards my work.

Once more people have completed my questionnaire I will upload my findings.

Research into Target Audience

For my target audience research I decided to produce a survey on www.surveymonkey.com which I sent to some of my friends through a social networking message. Some of them have already completed the survey but I am still waiting for some results. I asked the following questions;

1. Are you male or female?

When I asked the question 'Are you male or female?', it was because I wanted to find out what different genres would like to see in music videos. 81% of the people I asked were female and 19% were male. Even though the majority of the people I asked are female, therefore the answers will be based on a females opinion we are still going to try and aim our video to aim at both target audiences especially as the band are male and are aiming their music at a wide target audience.

2. What age group do you fit under?

I asked the question 'What age group do you fit under?' so that I could find out if the age group varies to what they want to see in music videos. We can clearly see that the majority of the people we asked are from my own age group. This is quite simply because they are the people who are most easily accessible to ask. Although people may now see our answers as biased to a younger audience this age group is most probably the people who are likely to watch our music video therefore their opinions are helpful.

3. What genres of music do you like?

I asked the question 'What genres of music do you like?' because I wanted to make sure that Indie was one of the most popular ones as our song is indie and we want it to attract a large audience. Getting the target audiences opinion is important as we can get an idea about the amount of people who are going to enjoy what genre of music. A lot of people are versitile in the music they listen to, therefore having a popular indie song would be appropriate for the people who are going to watch it.

4. Do you like to watch a colour or black and white music video?

I asked the question 'Do you like to watch a colour or black and white music?' because we wanted to find out which of the two the audience prefer. We have found that they do prefer a colour video but we may not follow this because indie music videos do tend to be in black and white including the following;

5. What is your favourite music video and why?

Thriller by Michael Jackson because when I was younger I remember waiting for it to come on to TV for the first time when it came out. It was spectacular and still is today, it will always be remembered in the future.

Take On Me by A-Ha. Before this music video most music videos were quite boring, it changed music videos and made them into an art form. It was very different to anything else which had ever been produced.

6. What do you prefer in a music video?

I asked the question 'What do you prefer in a music video?' because I wanted to know what people preferred so that we could apply it to our music video. As people have said a mixture of both we have decided to do a mixture in the filming. Based on these answers we can see that people like a change of scenes throughout the music therefore having a lot of characters and different things going on the music video we can see people enjoy. Therefore this helps us come to a decision of having a mixture of narrative and performance throughout the music video.

7. Do you tend to watch a music video more than once?

I asked the question 'Do you tend to watch a music video more than once?' because I wanted to know if my audience found it interesting to watch a music video multiple times. If people see a music video and it is boring they will obviously not want to watch it again. Therefore to enable people watch our music video numerous times, making it more popular and succeessful we will need to make our music video intersting and effective.

Video Directors

Music videos have a vital job in promoting an artist and their song.

Shane Drake
Shane Drake is a popular American music director. He has directed videos for bands such as Paramore, Fall Out Boy and Flo-rida and many more. In 2006 Drake won a MTV music award for music video of the year for a music video he produced for Panic at the Disco. From the people who Drake has worked with you can see that he has stuck with quite a similar genre throughout, mostly being punk rock, with only some exceptions. He has produced over 60 music videos ranging from 2004 - present. Some popular videos which he has produced include: Gym Class Heroes, 'The Queen and I', Panic at the Disco, 'But Its Better If You Do', Plain White T's 'Our Time Now' and Flo-rida 'Sugar'

Colin Tilley
Colin Tilley is an award music video director, who has written music and directed music videos for artists such as Chris Brown, Justin Bieber and Keri Hilson. One of his awards includes a BET award for Justin Bieber's video, 'You Smile' Tilly history shows that he works with artists mostly from a popular genre but also does collaborations with RnB and rap artists.

Music Video Analysis 2: The Kooks - Naive

For my second analysis I chose to use The Kooks who are also a popular indie rock style band, signed by Virgin Records. I chose to use their video as it is a similar style to the one which we would like to achieve, going with the mixture of the performance and the narrative. Also one of the main people which the narrative focuses on is someone  in a club and being drunk which also follows our lyrics therefore is similar to what music video we are going to create. The song peaked at number 5 in the UK charts in March 2006 as part of their debut album 'Inside In/Inside Out'

The opening shot for this video involves the lead singer, Luke Pritchard, walking slowly down the stairs with his hands in his pockets and his body language/ facial expressions suggesting is he unhappy or glum about something. The opening lines, 'I'm not saying it was your fault, although you could have done more. You're so naive yet so' which are the lines repeatedly used throughout. Instantly suggests to the audience that his sad expressions will have something to do with his relationship or a girl. He walks into a building and seems to be looking for someone, you then realise that he is in a club as he walks through the main dance floor. The video uses straight cuts which switches to a different narrative of people who are waking up, looking like they had been out the night before. This suggests to the audience that it is the following morning to him being in the club and the club shots are flashbacks, or that the waking up are flashbacks suggests that drinking/ being in clubs is something they do on a regular basis.

Whilst he is walking through the club he keeps stopping and looking at blonde women, who look similar to the woman in the flashback. Automatically suggesting that the woman who the song is based upon is that woman and thats who he is looking for. The video uses straight cuts to switch to the blonde woman with a glass of wine in her hand and stumbling showing that she is very drunk. Her being drunk could explain the flashbacks possibly suggesting she does this a lot, and could possibly lead to being an alcoholic which would correspond with the lyrics 'such an ugly name, for something so beautiful'

The Video shows the woman falling into a guy who looks similar to her partner/ the person who is looking for her, suggesting she is looking for him but is too drunk and mistakes him for someone else. This could also be what is putting strain onto the relationship as if the other man didn't push her off it could lead to her being unfaithful. Other lyrics which also suggests that she is cheating on him includes; 'and every time your on his side' suggesting there are other men involved; 'I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking' Suggesting that he knows she is unfaithful towards him and she knows that he has an idea of what she is doing but doesn't like asking her about it; 'your so naive yet so' The main line which is used throughout the song is suggesting that she is naive to think that he wouldn't find out. The video matches well with these lyrics as the video leads to her being in the toilets with another man.

Towards the end of the song this comes true and he sees her walking out the toilet followed by another man which was in there with her. An over the shoulder shot is used to show his reaction and him walking away from her. The lyrics which are being used at the time 'just don't let me down' are ironic as he's asking her not to let him down although he has already caught her cheating on him therefore already letting him down. After finding her he is pushing his way through the crowd, obviously angry about what he just saw when a guy pushes him leading him to retaliate and push him back. Showing the audience the effect that she has on him as she has obviously made him angry. The final shot involves him and another guy, possibly a friend sat at the bar watching her stumble by them with another glass of wine in her hand. This supports the theory that she drinks too much. It also suggests to the audience that he might have realised that he should stop helping her as earlier in the video, he holds her hair back for her when she is throwing up, however now at the end he is just watching her stumble away showing that he has made progress and he no long wants to be 'let down'

Music Video Analysis: Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

The first video which I have chose to analyse is Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down. The Arctic Monkeys are a prime example of a very successful band from the indie rock genre. Who are signed onto their own 'Bang Bang' label.

'When The Sun Goes Down' was the second song released by Arctic Monkeys, on the 16th November 2005.  The song follows the story of a prostitute from Sheffield, narrated by a man who the prostitute once approached. He then describes a 'scummy man' who is implied to be her pimp or possibly a previous client.

Beginning
On the official video of the song the opening involves no music, however it is a woman speaking with what would be seen as a 'common' dialect. The lines are short however immediately suggest a woman wanting an intimate relationship with a man, due to the lines such as, 'I'll treat you nice' and 'I won't bite' Which instantly foreshadows what the theme could be for the rest of the song.  The first shot is of text saying 'Right behind us are the ones hidden by the night' I think this is suggesting that there are many people around us who we do not see both sides of. Many people may appear good however are different  behind closed doors. I think this line is describing the 'scummy man' which the song refers to. After the text has gone the first shot is a mid - close up of a woman stood with lots of layers on and her hood up. You can see snow in the background obviously showing its winter and really cold. This is when the music comes in and the woman stands still, looking blankly into the camera.

Verse 1
In the first verse there are immediate suggestions that the woman is a prostitute and is the only thing you do to make money. As the narrator is coming from a bystander it also suggests a possibility that that is who is talking about the woman. We are also introduced to the 'scummy man' who is described throughout the video. The video shows the man talking to the woman, you can see that they have quite a close relationship as they are together in a house eating food. However by the woman facial expressions you can see she isn't enthusiastic about the relationship.

You can also see that he handles her aggressively when he drags her into the car, showing that he has some power over her. This suggests to the audience that he is possibly her pimp. As the music increases  in tempo the video matches. The video is edited so that the shots are faster making them not in focus. This shows the fast change from day to night. There is a close up of the woman's face as she stands still from a with the background moving fast portraying the busy city. This relates back to her life as it shows that her life as a prostitute is not going anywhere and she isn't moving forward.

As the verse continues you see her approaching a man who refuses her. This man seems to be the narrator as the lyrics are in first person. 'She made a subtle proposition, I'm sorry love I'll have to turn you down' From here you can see the possibilities that the narrator lives locally and has interacted with her before.

Chorus
When the chorus comes on there is a mid shot of the back of someone. It is a new character in the video and you can easily see that he is practicing magic tricks. When he is practicing the magic tricks you can see on one of them he burns himself suggesting he isn't one of the best magicians. The magician appears from the place which he is practicing to find the woman sat outside. A straight cut is then used to the woman wearing a pink sequined dress over her usual tracksuit bottoms and a hoody. Suggesting that she is now going to help the magician and become his assistant.

 Verse 2
In the second verse the 'scummy man' finds the magician in what looks like a hotel room and acts violently towards him. Obviously showing that he isn't happy that the woman has found possibly other work, a place to live and possibly a new relationship with another man. Matching the lyrics of 'Bet she's delighted when she sees him' and 'because she must be fucking freezing'

Repeated Final Chorus
The second chorus follows what looks like a taxi journey home, possibly picking her up from wherever the magician was. He looks like he is telling her off or giving her a lecture as his hand gestures show him raising a fist and also grabbing her face. She then seems angry and starts throwing furniture around. Similar to the first chorus there is also the quick, out of focus shots, of the traffic zooming around the busy city. I think this relates back as in verse 2 it seemed that she was about to move forward, but the loop back to the same shots in the first chorus could mean she has gone back a step and is now in the same situation as before.

The magician is also showing the same attitude and seems upset about what has happened and that the girl can no longer be part of his magic act. When the 'scummy man' drags the woman through the magicians door the magician seems hopeful that she has come back until the woman then starts to throw abuse at him.

Final Verse
The final verse has the same slow tempo as the first verse bringing a close to the video. The final few shots are of the woman and the man showing no change from the beginning of the song. The final shot is a close up of the woman as she stands still looking blankly into the camera. Showing her life continues to follow the same routine and she hasn't made any progress.

This video shows true colours of some people who live in areas such as this and exactly what they're life is like. The song also relates to people in real life situations. The main line in the chorus, and also the title, 'they say it changes when the sun goes down' reflects how in these cases there life doesn't change and once in hard situations which the woman is obviously in, they're hard to get out of it.

Editing
This video follows a lot of conventions throughout it. The video uses a range of close shots ranging from close ups to long shots, as you can see from the image above the close ups show the emotions of the girl who is in the video. This follows Pete Fraser's theory in that close ups allow the audience to feel intimacy with the actors in the video. This video also reflects the tempo of the music, at the beginning the jump cuts which are used are slower then as the tempo increases the pace of the jump cuts increases. This also follows Pete Fraser's theory as he suggests that slower cuts are used to set a mood for the video and obviously in this one it makes the audience feel sorry for the woman who is in it.
