Genres of Music

Pop
People often define 'Pop Music' as 'having popular appeal' and is seen as a genre of music which appeals and is accessible to a wide audience. Leading this music to sell the most copies, plays at the largest concerts and is played most often on the radio. The structure of a pop song normally consists of a verse and repeated chorus, lasting around 3 minutes long. (With some exceptions) The structure of pop songs helps make them memorable, appealing to the audience as they can sing along, which is most normally catchy lyrics. Lyrics commonly based on categories such as love, friends, partying or money.

Pop artists such as; Britney Spears, Justin Bieber and Pixie Lott

A good example includes Justin Bieber 'One Time' Where the lyrics are based on a love story, however, slightly over the average time at 4 minutes but still following the common structure leading it to be catchy and memorable.

R&B
Rhythm and Blues which is often abbreviated to R&B is a genre most popular by African American artists. Which more came around more popularly in the 1940's. The music often follows upon a four-beat  measures or bars along with a backbeat. Hence the part of the name 'Rhythm'. The 'Blues' part reflected the lyrics and melody of the song, which at the time were commonly sad. In recent years R&B describes a wider range of songs by African American artists of an urban style. Although can also be placed in the genre funk and/or soul.

R&B artists such as; Beyonce; Rihanna and Bruno Mars

Indie Rock
The term indie, comes from 'independent' and describes a band or artist that prefers to produce their own music rather than being signed to a large record company who may try to influence or manipulate the music. As they choose to produce themselves they often have small budgets which can lead to them not being as successful in the charts as the 'pop' genre. However this isn't always the case as often they break through and become mainstream.

Indie rock bands such as; Bombay Bicycle Club; Arctic Monkeys and Jamie T

Here is an example of Jamie T - If You Got The Money. Jamie T is a good example of an indie rock artist as he is signed to a small record label as many are. This video has a mixture of a narrative and a performance which is what we would like to follow for our music video.


Rock 
Rock music dates back to the 1940's and is heavily influenced by rhythm and blues. Commonly rock music is centered around an electric guitar usually as part of a rock group with a bass guitar and drums. Rock commonly follows a 4/4 beat utilizing a verse-chorus form. Recently rock is divided between many other genres such as country-rock and pop-rock.

Hip Hop/Rap

Hip hop music is more of an American based genre of music which most popularly came around in the 1970's. Hip hop dance also began around this time as part of the hip hop culture of rap, scratch music and graffiti art. 

Artists such as Jay Z, Eminem, and Nicki Minaj all dominate the hip hop/rap industry.
