Preliminary Task

Task Outline
For our preliminary task our aim  for the class was to recreate the first 1 minute 30 seconds of the classic Britney Spears song, 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'. Everybody in the class had to take part and contribute in the filming, editing and overall production of the film.

The Original Video

As you can see the original video is set in a school making it very easy to recreate the setting as it is similar to where we already are in the Sixth Form. Leaving the buildings very easily accessable.

Planning
As we are quite a large group planning was essential so that everybody knew what they were doing at all times. Richard and James created screen dumps of every shot which was in the first half of the video. Then each member of the class got assigned to a different shot. The screen dumps were extremely helpful as they allowed everybody in the class to know exactly the order of what was happening and when they were needed. It was also helpful for the director and filmer as they knew what angle and type of shot they needed.

Filming
Even though we were in a big group we tried to all equally have a chance to film certain shots. In the class some people had more leadership roles which sometimes made it difficult to all get an equal chance to take part. However we all wanted an equal role so we tried to speak up and all suggest more ideas about lighting and camera postioning etc so that we all could contribute towards the filming of the video. Even if we weren't holding the camera at all times.

Everybody who was acting in the shot all created the mise en scene by bringing appropriate clothes to change into to match what people were wearing in the actually video. All the girls wore school shirts and school skirts with either tights or knee high socks. We also all wore out hair in pig tails or plaits similar to how Britney Spears wore her hair in the video. The boys also wore school shirts and blazers to fit in with the 'school theme' of the video. Other props were added to the shots to insure that they looked the same as the original video such as the lockers, the pen and the bags.

I believe that the shots that I helped out with were very similar to the video. I tried to make sure I knew what I was doing before it came to the shot. I think the screen dumps were the most helpful as it showed me exactly what the camera angle and shot was like. My part in the video involved a lot of dancing within the group. We all had to learn the chorography which we all had to rehearse before to make sure that it was right. I think that we all did a good job at the dancing as non of us are dancers so we all put a lot of effort in to making sure it looked right.

Editing
For the editing we decided to split into two groups, one half of the class edited the first 45 seconds and the other half of the class edited the second half of the class. We believed that dividing the class into two like this allowed every student a big chunk of video to edit allowing us all to have a good shot at trying to re-create the video. I worked with Emily Clarke with the editing, we both had an equal shot at editing the video and both contributed ideas and tried to help eachother when it came to making the video. Most of the editing consisted on cutting and working on the quick shots. There wasn't lots of specail effects or complicated editing which was necersary therefore was a nice film to recreate. I took a few days off college at the end of  the preliminary task leaving Emily to finish of the final bits of editing, I was really happy with the final product and thought that Emily finished it off really well and the overall film as good.

The Final Video
Add the video

Overall I think that the video turned out really well and was a good recreation of the original video. I think me being infront of the camera was a good change for me as I don't usually like acting or being filmed therefore it gave me a chance to do something new and gain skills in acting and dancing. I think the whole group worked really well together and we were all very relaxed and negotiated all of the roles equally. I believe it all helped us in our roles and we learnt how to work in a very large group.

Evaluation
I think our replica of the video 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' was quite accurate. Although some of the shots weren't all there and the dance moves weren't exactly accurate I believe that the recreation of the video was very similiar, and although the quality wasn't the same quality due to the different equipment and the space which is avalible. I think it gave s all the oppourtuinty to learn new skills as we all learnt how to co-operate with eachother effectivley and negotiate so everyone can equally share the necessary roles.

Creating this music video allowed me to see how difficult it is to make your own music video and all the processes involved. I think the biggest shock was how often the shot changes as all the shots changed roughly every few seconds showing me that when I record my own music video in A2 I need to experience from lots of different shots and angles to make the video look effective. I believe that it has prepared me for when I create my own music video as I have seen all the different aspects which need to be involved.
